Starbucks Reserve in NYC

The beloved American multinational chain, Starbucks, which opened their first store in Seattle (1971) and now has over 32000 stores around the globe, has in the recent years expanded their concept to a more upscale experience. They called it Starbucks Reserve.

As they themselves describe, “Our Roasteries are theatrical, experiential shrines to coffee passion… mixologists and baristas ply their craft to coax perfectly flavorful, often unexpectedly artful expressions from our rare, single-origin coffees…”

With 6 reserve roasteries around the world (Seattle, Shanghai, Milan, Tokyo, Chicago, and New York), Starbucks Reserve opened its doors in New York City at the end of 2018 (https://www.starbucksreserve.com/en-us/locations/new-york). The Meatpacking District, the trendy neighborhood on NYC’s west side, is the chosen location, with its beautiful cobblestone streets, high-end designer clothing stores, excellent restaurants, clubs, and expensive hotels.

Here in this article, we are going to immerse the reader into the java world at Starbucks Reserve in NYC.

World of Coffee and Experiences

The Starbucks Reserve in NYC is a coffee lover’s dream, with plenty to see and explore. There are 3 different coffee bars (yes, coffee and cocktails!), a roasting area where coffee is roasted daily, and the main area where you can explore and shop the different coffee varieties, from single-origin to blends.

Moreover, while walking around the store, we had a chance to taste one of their cold brews, Knob Creek’s Bourbon Whiskey Barrel-Aged, which was interesting and delicious.

Few of the single-origin varieties available when we visited the store were: Brazil, Ethiopia, Bali, Colombia, and Papua New Guinea. Freshly roasted coffee beans are available for purchase with the option of grinding at the store. Coffee connoisseurs may agree that finding fresh roasted coffee in the middle of NYC is no trivial task. This, my dear readers, is NYC luxury!

The perfect setting for a quick grab is The Main Bar. You can order one of the available seasonal coffees, choose your preferred brewing method, and pair it with your favorite pastry, dessert or a slice of pizza from their Princi Bakery.

Another one is The Experience Bar. As the name suggests, it is designed for a deeper and sensorial experience. Different coffee tastings are available, from espresso to cold brew tastings and even a brewing method comparison flight. You can select the siphon brewing method experience or go for the art of Chemex, which is considered a better brewing choice for those looking for a well-balanced and smooth cup of coffee.

Arriviamo Bar

If you are more in the mood for a cocktail, not a problem! The Arriviamo Bar is the right choice for you, with mixology options using coffee, such as the Espresso Martini Flight, or caffeinated ingredients such as Matcha green tea, and their own variation of the classic drinks Old Fashioned and Manhattan.

Since we are fans of both coffee and whiskey, we decided to try the “The Whiskey Cloud”: coffee, amaro, whiskey, orange syrup, chocolate bitters and nutmeg. Sounds like a lot is going on in this mix? Not at all! It was the perfect combination! A warm (literally, the drink is meant to be enjoyed warm) and delightful surprise: whiskey in the bottom of a mug and on the side, the “coffee and cream” for you to pour over and enjoy. Such a cool and unexpected way to present a drink.

A Coffee Experience

And of course, we cannot forget to talk about the roasting area. The Cask is a big copper vessel where they roast and rest the coffee beans before releasing it for sale. Coffee masters will be handling the green beams, and the coffee being transported in and out of the cast in tubular conveyor belts. And if you like to have a complete coffee experience, choose a coffee tasting offered with the Roastery tour.

So, next time you visit New York City, what about a delicious cup of Joe (or Joe drink)?
